A MAN whose varied career took him from RAF serviceman to removal man to the stars has marked his 100th birthday.
Henry Emery – known to friends as Harry – was joined by three generations of his family for the landmark occasion at Hunters Down care centre in Huntingdon on Monday, January 30.
Harry and his wife Connie lived in Fenstanton for over 20 years, until Connie’s death in 2006. He moved into Hunters Down just over a year ago, and has regular visits from his children Margaret and John.
He received a card from the Queen, as well as many others from friends from across the world, and celebrated with a cake baked by the home’s care staff.
A keen sportsman in his youth, Harry has been a lifelong fan of Coventry City, the town where he grew up, and Newcastle United, because of family connections.
He lived in Coventry, and survived the German air raid of November 1940 which destroyed most of the city centre and the cathedral.
Shortly after that Harry was recruited into the RAF, and served in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, where he contracted malaria. He came home in 1946, to meet his new daughter Margaret for the first time.
After the war, he also worked for travel agent Thomas Cook and as a removals estimator for Harrods in London, where he organised removals for celebrities Joan Crawford and Douglas Fairbanks Jr.
