A FOUR-wheel drive ‘Multihog’ snowplough is Cambridgeshire County Council’s answer to potential snow and ice problems on the guided busway during the winter.
The �75,000 machine will grit and spray brine on the busway and bridleway, which could not be treated using the council’s existing gritters.
The vehicle, which CCC says will save money because it replaces machinery currently leased, can also be used for hard-to-reach areas around the county – such as town centres – and for road maintenance tasks. It carries 1,200 litres of brine, has a 90-horsepower engine and a top speed of 25mph.
Councillor Steve Criswell, portfolio-holder for community infrastructure, said planer and sweeper attachments would mean the council got year-round use from the vehicle.
“Thanks to the flexibility of this machine it is not only perfect for treating the maintenance track and other areas during the winter months, but because of the range of attachments available it can be used for other work also – it is certainly not going to be sitting in a garage for half the year,” he added.
