WORK on the first stage of a new 18-hole golf course in St Ives is nearing completion.
Land transformation work at the club's new home, between St Ives and Needingworth, began in April.
A small reservoir has been constructed to hold 25,000,000 litres of water for irrigation of the new course and 136,000 square metres of drainage has been laid.
A total of 375,000 tonnes of soil has been moved and re-shaped to form fairways while 6,500 square metres of sand bunkers have been created.
In spring next year the greens, tees and bunkers will be finished, with the course given a 12-month growing-in period, ready to open in spring 2009.
Construction of the clubhouse, driving range and stewards house will begin in spring 2009.
