THE first half of Godmanchester's replacement 150,000 Chinese bridge arrived in the town on Monday for manoeuvring into place across the River Great Ouse. It replaces an identical-looking Grade II*-listed structure that was becoming dangerous after 50 years' use and was itself a replica of an earlier bridge. It was removed last week. The new bridge should be open to the public by the end of next week.
The total cost of the replacement scheme to Cambridgeshire County Council, including consultants' and other costs, is around 250,000.
