IN his response to Malcolm Cohen's letter, Cllr Nigel Pauley (Letters, March 24) doesn't mention the name of the owners of the land he refers to in Godmanchester, of whom I am one, although he says much about us.

He describes us as a "leading Liberal-supporting family". Over recent years, various close relatives of mine have told me of their voting intentions which included: Conservative, Labour, Green and Lib Dem, whilst others have kept their politics to themselves.

Cllr Pauley says the "family helped choose Mr Cohen as the Lib-Dem candidate". My wife and I are the only Lib Dem members in the family and neither of us took any part in the selection of any candidates.

The position of my wife (the ex-Mayor) on the town council was not, as he suggests, "untenable". She declared her interest and left the room every time the land concerned was discussed and could have continued to do so if she had wished to remain on the council. She resigned because sooner or later someone like Cllr Pauley would insinuate that she had some influence on the council's decisions regarding the land, without mentioning that she'd left the room. In any case, the town council does not make decisions on development, that is done by the district council.

The playing field (Judith's Field), said by Cllr Pauley to have been "donated by the Liberal supporting family", was in fact let at a rent of 1 a year to the town council by my late father who was a very loyal member of the Conservative Party. I am sorry to spoil a good story, but Judith's Field could only have been "under threat from developers" if the town council had willingly surrendered its lease which still has 77 years to run. Thanks to my father, it's the town council's call.
