A MAN pleaded guilty to drunkenly assaulting his girlfriend while her two young children were upstairs.

John Mitchell, 30, of Cambridge Road, Godmanchester, admitted pushing Joanna Northrup to the ground and grabbing her by the wrists after returning from an evening drinking on August 24.

John Goodier, prosecuting for the Crown Prosecution Service, told Huntingdon Magistrates' Court last Wednesday how Ms Northrup, of Post Street, Godmanchester, had asked Mitchell to leave when he had returned home from the pub.

When he refused, the pair struggled, and Ms Northrup was left with bruising on her cheek and a three-inch scratch on her back.

Kevin Warboys, mitigating, said Mitchell had previously sought help for his alcohol problems and would continue to do so.

Two more serious charges of making threats to kill and assault causing actual bodily harm were dropped.

Mitchell was remanded on bail for three weeks and told to return to the court on September 27 for sentence.
