A MUSICAN who has gone to the great gig in the sky after losing his battle with cancer is to be remembered at a fundraising concert in St Neots.
Bob Jones, who was a drummer, died of stomach cancer on January 12, aged 54.
Friends and family of the St Neots musician have organised a memorial concert at Eynesbury Rovers Football Club on May 22 to raise money for Sue Ryder Care, the long term care provider.
Mr Jones was thought to have been recovering from stomach cancer following long chemotherapy sessions and an operation to remove his stomach.
However, he was taken back to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge with a hernia, but the cancer had returned and was terminal. Mr Jones died a month later.
Mark Gamble, who was in a band with Mr Jones, said: "It came as a real shock. He had been given the all clear and had just gone back to work .
"We thought he had beaten it and we were just waiting for him to get well."
Mr Jones continued to play for several bands during his treatment and was said to never miss "a chance to pick up the sticks".
Mr Gamble, whose band the Mark Gamble Band will be performing at the gig, said: "One time we were offered a gig and our drummer was away. I called Bob and he said: 'I'm going in for an exploratory operation but I will be fine to play'.
"When he arrived he lifted up his shirt and he still had the plaster over where they had operated. He played the gig and was absolutely brilliant."
Lou Mouatt, Mr Jones' sister, added: "We shared a difficulty childhood but throughout that Bob was a wonderful brother. He will be sadly missed."
The gig will also feature the Pigs, Off Road and friends from the Hare and Hounds Jam, and will raise money for Sue Ryder Care centre in Moggerhanger, where Mr Jones spent his last days.
INFORMATION: The gig will take place at Eynesbury Rovers Football Club on Saturday, May 22. Tickets cost £5 and can be purchased on the door. For more information visit the Bob Jones Memorial Gig group on Facebook.
