AS the local district councillors in Godmanchester, we would like to say we are delighted that the Highways Agency has seen fit to confirm the Orange route.

The local press does not seem to think Godmanchester exists.

In its coverage (those that did mention the A14) none of them asked for any comment from Godmanchester and its 6,000 residents.

After all, we are the ones who suffer when there is a problem on the A14 and will no doubt continue to do so for the next eight years on a regular and ever-increasing basis.

Having looked at the proposal regarding the possibility of a limited exit for the A1198, we are disappointed, as we are sure this will be of no benefit for the residents of Godmanchester or Huntingdon.

Even if motorists were directed to the A428, the dualling to the Black Cat roundabout is not now expected before 2020.

Surely any decision to direct traffic through populated areas and over our historic bridge would be a bad one that would leave the wrong legacy for future generations.

We have lobbied quietly and confidently for the Orange route with several hundred letters going to both the Member of Parliament and the Highways Agency. Thank you both for taking notice of Godmanchester.

It seems strange that a couple of weeks ago the whole country was talking about the possibility of a general election. How many of us remember that it was the announcement last general election that delayed the first consultation a couple of years ago.

Now, we have one further message to the Highways Agency: just get started and build the road.

Councillors CAROL GODLEY and COLIN HYAMS, Huntingdonshire District Council
