What an excellent letter from W.B. Carter (Restart dredging to beat flooding) in your issue July 30.

I would like to add that with more and more building going on, the resultant brick, concrete and tarmac reduce the area of land able to soak up excess rainfall, and it is surely necessary not only to maintain and deepen existing watercourses but also to dig more.

I suggest that staff at the Environment Agency and other relevant organisations stop wringing their hands and asserting there is little we can do to stop flooding, and swap their white shirts for waders, wellies and shovels.

I also suggest our councillors put aside their bickering and their preoccupation with traffic calming, playgrounds and bus shelters, and put their attention to pushing those responsible to tackle this more important and long-neglected situation.
