PUPILS from Priory Park Primary School in St Neots and St Helen's School, Bluntisham joined over 100,000 children in a nationwide attempt to break the Guinness World Record for "the largest number of children involved in a walking bus simultaneously at different locations" on Wednesday, June 17.

Set to break the previous record of 57,476 children, the event was organised by BRAKE- a charity that supports children injured in road traffic accidents.

The charity says a child is hurt or killed on the nation's roads every 16 minutes and BRAKE is hoping to raise over 70,000 to better fund the level of support it can offer. It also hopes to publicise the charity's campaign to have drivers slow down to 20mph in the most heavily built-up areas. A pedestrian hit by a car travelling by a car at 40mph has a five per cent chance of survival whereas if the car is travelling at 20mph the pedestrian has a 95 per cent chance of surviving.

Reception teacher, Marnie Jolly, who is co-ordinating the attempt at Priory Park, said: "We hope to raise the profile and funds for this very worthwhile charity as we teach children about the importance of road safety. This is the second time that we have joined Brake in their attempt and we are hoping it will be successful as the children are so excited about being in the Guinness World Records book.
