BUYING citrus fruit and avocados in Huntingdon Waitrose is helping to provide education and health projects for the farm workers who grow them. In June last year, Waitrose introduced a scheme to give part of the profits of selling fruit back to the people who supplied it on citrus and avocado farms in South Africa. The scheme has already generated over £330,000, and is expected to yield another £500,000 for community projects by October. The cash is spent on setting up projects including crèches, building classrooms and helping with adult education. Waitrose has had a long-term relationship with 18 farms in South Africa. On each farm, the grower and workers meet to decide what facilities they need before applying for grants. INFORMATION: South African citrus fruit has its own logo.
