COUNCILLOR Carol Godley, a former Mayor of Godmanchester, died suddenly at home this morning (Friday).

Carol Anne Godley, who was 61, lived with her husband Peter in Cambridge Road, Godmanchester. She was Mayor of Godmanchester in 1998.

She had attended meetings of Huntingdonshire District Council, on which she represented the town, on Wednesday and Godmanchester Town Council last night.

She joined HDC in 2000 as a Liberal Democrat, moving to the Conservatives in September 2003. But it was for her work in the town, rather than party politics, that she will be best remembered.

Fellow district councillor Colin Hyams said today: "To me, Carol was Godmanchester. She was a great inspiration and made a big impression on me. She worked tirelessly for the elderly, the young, the schools, everyone."

HDC leader, Councillor Ian Bates, said: "She was a superb and dedicated ward councillor of long standing, who will be greatly missed by the people of Godmanchester."

Councillor Peter Downes, leader of the Liberal Democrat group on HDC, said: "Carol made a big contribution to community life in Godmanchester over many years, and it was because of her record of service and commitment that we encouraged her to become a district councillor.

"It was of course a disappointment for us that she defected to the Conservatives, but we nevertheless recognise that she continued to do her best to serve the local community. Godmanchester will be a poorer place without her."

The funeral arrangements have not yet been made.
