AFTER just weeks of being open the new A428 at Cambourne was closed last Thursday evening after torrential flooding across the county.

Drivers were stuck in heavy traffic during the evening rush hour because the new A428 had flooded on both sides of the carriageway under the bridge at Cambourne.

Police were called at 5.50pm after reports of up to four inches of water on the road making it difficult for motorists to cross. One caller described the scene to officers as "mayhem."

The road was closed at 6.30pm and diversions were set up.

On the same evening firefighters were called to 15 incidents of flooding between 6pm and 8pm including incidents of abandoned vehicles and flooded homes.

Roads in Yelling, Great Gransden, Little Gransden, Caxton and Bourne were all affected.
