FIREFIGHTERS got out their spades and dug a water channel to help extinguish a fire at a nature reserve in Holme. Firefighters from Yaxley were called to the blaze at Holme Fen Nature Reserve in Long Drove at 7.47pm on Thursday (June 18). When they arrived on the scene they found an area of peat measuring about two metres in diameter on fire. Crews extinguished the fire by digging a channel from a nearby lake to allow the water to engulf the blaze. They had returned to base by 9.20pm.
