A NEW centre offering spa treatments could be built in St Neots if expansion plans for the town's leisure centre are given the go-ahead.

Huntingdonshire District Council has submitted an application to extend St Neots Leisure Centre in Barford Road, Eynesbury.

The plans include extending the fitness suite, and adding crèche facilities and a multi-purpose studio.

In addition, a 'wellness area' would be created, incorporating two treatment rooms, a relaxation room and hot/cold rooms.

HDC says the extension is needed because the centre is "under-achieving in both income and admissions relative to its counterparts".

The planning documents state: "Impressions Fitness Suite is the smallest of five in the district and the whole dry facility suffers from a poor layout as individual facilities have been added since opening some 20 years ago.

"With impending growth for the town there is a clear and urgent need to re-model the existing centre to provide a business which can accommodate both current and future need."

Other proposals include new male, female and team changing rooms and a re-modelled bar and kitchen.

The plans would see the extension constructed on land adjacent to the present centre.

It would take place in four parts, with the aim of causing minimal disruption.

Planners are expected to make a decision by the end of June.
