EU is the root of all evil

IN response to Florence Jenner's letter (October 16), I would like to say how much I enjoyed the Continental market in Huntingdon. However, like her, I regard the EU flag as the flag of an occupying power and resent its presence wherever it is flown in the United Kingdom.
The British people have never been allowed a referendum on whether or not they should be governed by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels and Strasbourg and, since 75 to 80 per cent of our new laws emanate from the European Union, it is time for the people of the UK to be allowed a referendum on whether or not we should remain a member of this undemocratic oligarchy.
Readers of The Hunts Post may well say that we had a referendum in 1975 and there is no need for another one. Well, those of us who are old enough will remember that the question was: "Should Britain remain a member of the European Common Market" or words meaning the same thing.
Many people thought it was just a trade agreement and voted in favour of Britain's remaining a member. But now it has turned into a virtual government, and European Law over-rules British Law. The British Government has to implement European Law into British Law by means of Statutory Instruments that can often be forced through the House of Commons with no debate or vote by MPs.
On questions of implementing European Law our own Ministers and MPs are impotent and cannot change anything.
Mrs Jenner mentions the decline of the British fishing industry, the farming industry, small businesses, and the cutbacks in social services, and she could have included the post office closures and the demise of the once proud British shipbuilding industry and many other areas where EU law and regulations have increased costs to both industry and the public.

We have also had a regional system of government forced on us, where bodies such as the Eastern Regional Assembly and Eastern of England Development Agency, working with EU functionaries and bureaucrats, can overrule elected county, city and town councillors.
To add insult to injury, the £12billion or so that we give to the EU for our membership is only partly returned through the regional agencies, but is then called "European money".
Britain is fast becoming a colony of the New European Empire, and anyone who likes that situation may well like the EU flag flying over our land. But those of us who resent the giving away of British sovereignty, freedom and independence to the elitist mandarins in Brussels by Governments of all political colours since Ted Heath dragooned us all into the Common Market see the EU flag as belonging to an occupying power. No wonder Mrs Jenner was angry. She knows what the EU flag represents.
