Emergency repairs taking place to the A14 near Huntingdon today (Friday) should be completed before the evening rush hour, Highways England has said.
The roads authority says it is carrying out “deep surface repairs” on the A14 eastbound between the Spittals interchange and the rail viaduct.
The work has been ongoing since this morning and has seen one lane closed to traffic, causing delays in the area.
A spokesman for Highways England said: “[The work] should be completed in time for tonight’s peak period. We’ve doing this now to ensure road users have smoother journeys when the Christmas getaway period starts next week.”
A planned closure is also in place for the eastbound carriageway between junction 26 and junction 31 tonight as part of the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon improvements. The closure is being imposed to remedy an issue caused by the low, winter morning sun reflecting on old blacked out white lines between Bar Hill and Girton.
The spokesman said: “We understand the issue is causing road users to confuse the old blacked out lines with the temporary, narrow lanes white lines we have installed as part of the improvement scheme and have been looking at the best possible solution.
“We are planning to repaint the new, narrow lane white lines along this section of road tonight to make them more obvious and to further dull-down the blacked out old lines so they are no longer as visible.”
