I WOULD like to follow up on the article ‘Time to sort out the Earith road and stop the gridlock in Cambs’ (December 12, 2012)

Yet again, The Causeway at Earith is closed but why? The road is partially covered, there is a large puddle at the far end of The Causeway, which doesn’t even cover half the road. Yet still The Causeway is closed, resulting in the long detours and congestion mentioned in the article.

Can anyone shed any light on the reason for the closure? Surely if there is a valid reason for this closure then every ford in the country should also be closed every time they get wet. In reality, most people ignore the road closure when it is like this and drive through regardless but they then risk possible police action for ignoring a road closure. At the least, can’t the authorities classify Earith Causeway as a ford at let us drive through at our own risk?

I travel from Somersham to Ely on a daily basis, hence the need to use Earith Causeway. Another point that I find very irritating is that while the signs on the west side of the river are very good, i.e. at St Ives, Somersham, Willingham, those on the east side are next to useless. Travelling from Ely (via Sutton), I see no signs that The Causeway is closed until about 100 yards from the causeway itself, which means that I need to backtrack all the way to Sutton again before heading off to Chatteris. I don’t know whether there are signs at Haddenham. Surely a sign at Sutton, at the rounabout, would avoid drivers having to travel three miles to Earith and then three miles back again when the causeway is closed.
