A pothole is causing havoc for drivers on the A14 today (Wednesday) as emergency repairs are carried out.

Highways England shut the westbound carriageway entirely between junction 24 for Godmanchester and junction 23 for the Spittals Interchange at shortly after 9.15am.

The section of road was closed after a pothole was reported to be causing dangerous driving conditions.

A Highways England post on Twitter said: “We’re working to carry out emergency repairs to the road. Expect repairs to take until at least 4pm.”

Drivers are facing a diversion and queues are tailing back to Bar Hill.

The closure comes just two weeks after another pothole, along the same stretch of road, caused delays of more than an hour.

However, a spokesman for Highways England revealed that the pothole that has appeared today is not the same hole repaired on June 28.

Motorists can also expect holdups at the Brampton Hut roundabout on Great North Road following a collision between two lorries at about 10.50am.

An East of England Ambulance Service officer, rapid response vehicle, two ambulance crews and the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance were dispatched to the scene.

A male patient suffering a cardiac arrest was treated on scene and transported to the Hinchingbrooke Hospital by road in a critical condition. A second male patient was treated on scene for back injuries and transported by road to the Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

The incident has closed junction 21 of the A14 at Brampton Hut eastbound, along with the slip road onto the A1 northbound. The road will be closed on the A14 from Ellington.

A spokesman for Highways England said: “Cambridgeshire police have completed their investigation work and Highways England contractors are now working to clear up a significant diesel spillage as a result of the collision, recover the vehicles and repair damage to the road. The road is expected to remain closed for the next few hours, and probably into this afternoon’s peak.”

There are currently delays of about 45 minutes and motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
