After the expense of Christmas and New Year festivities, I thought it would be good to select on your behalf, only wines under a fiver. Enjoy !WHITES Inycon Chardonnay 2003/4, Sicily (reduced to £3.49 at Morrisons/Safeway and £3.74 Waitrose until January 29/February 5). Don't be put off that it's on offer again (as is the Shiraz version). This consistently good chardonnay with its generous, lightly oaked rich fruit will continue to please you, whichever vintage is available. Nathalie and Co Sauvignon Chardonnay 2004, France (£1.50 off to £4.49 at selected Co-op stores until January 22). An enjoyable innovative wine exclusive to the Co-op, which is both fruity and fresh - its complex, lasting flavours went down well with a variety of finger food snacks on New Year's Day. Errazuriz Chardonnay 2004, Chile (£1.50 off to £4.49 at Tesco until February 7). Another name you can rely on, with the ripe tropical fruit of this chardonnay contrasting well with touches of melon, gooseberry and pear. Baked haddock in a cheesy, spinach sauce liked it too. Arniston Bay Chenin Blanc/Chardonnay 2004/5, South Africa (£1.20 off to £3.79 at Morrisons/Safeway until January 29). It's fruity and refreshing. Appealing, apple and melon flavours combined well with tasty smoked trout pate from my local (Huntingdon) Farmers Market. Rutherglen Muscadelle 2005, Australia (half price down to £4.99 for a half bottle at Somerfield until January 31). Not my normal thing (I don't eat a lot of puds), but everyone enjoyed their chilled glass of this luscious, rich, not over the top, sweet wine with the fruit tarts on offer. REDS Cono Sur Cabernet Sauvignon 2004, Chile (£1 off to £3.99 at Morrisons /Safeway until January 29). Having just tried two questionable reds to go with our moussaka, I rediscovered this brilliant value cabernet with all its appealing flavours (including cherry, berry, plum and pepper). Cono Sur doesn't let us down. Errazuriz Merlot 2003/4, Chile (£1.50 off to £4.49 at Tesco until February 7). Rich, smooth, berry fruited wine, with depth, good balance and structure - enjoy it, say, with pork and mushroom pate or chilled on its own. Inycon Shiraz 2003/4, Sicily (£1.25 off to £3.74 at Waitrose until February 5). Yet another very good wine at a very good price from the Inycon stable. Once again its tasty, rich, peppery flavours combined well with steak and kidney pie. Co-op Idyllwild Pinot Noir 2004, USA (£1 off to £3.49 until January 22). A smooth, quaffable, berry fruited version with a touch of oak and spice. Of course, there are better versions around, but at this price, try it out with, say, roast pork or coq au vin (cooked in the same wine). Almena Reserva Rioja 1998, Spain (half price down to £4.49 at Somerfield until January 31). At this offer price, this blend of tempranillo and two other local grapes is well worth trying with its complex, 18 month oak aged flavours going down well with herby sausages and mash. SPARKLERS Co-op French Sparkling Chardonnay NV, France (£1.50 off to £3.99 until January 22). We were pleasantly surprised by this appealing, dry, fruity (citrussy) sparkler. It has a richness and body which is unusual at its normal price, let alone now. You can enjoy it on its own or all the way through a 2/3 course meal.
