The distraction burglary took place at about 9pm last Friday (December 5) at a house in Vicarage Walk, Great Staughton.
Police said a woman in her 70s was sitting in her kitchen when she heard a knock at the front door. When she went to investigate she found a man already inside her house asking to check the water pressure in the property.
The man asked the woman to go upstairs and turn on the taps in the bathroom.
When she returned downstairs she found the man gone and her purse open on the kitchen table with money missing from it.
The man was described as white, middle aged with dark hair.
