A WARBOYS teenager who has spent two years volunteering at a youth centre as well as setting up a website and drop-in centre, has been nominated for an award. Dan Walters, 17, of Oldmill Avenue, has been a regular volunteer at Ramsey Youth Service Centre in Hollow Lane, a service that has earned him an award nomination from youth arts worker Dibs Fletcher. She said because of a shortage of youth workers, some projects could not have taken place without Dan. "Dan has always been happy to help when needed, particularly with activities at the last minute," she said. He is always committed, and brilliant to have around. He's good fun and all the young people got on with him." The teenager is now in the running for a Cambridgeshire Young People of the Year (YOPEY) award, which recognises and reward young people for being positive role models. Dan, who is at Abbey College sixth form, started at the youth centre by getting involved in a drama and dance project. He now runs sessions and enjoys relating to young people. He said: "I had such a great time with the project that I decided I wanted to help further. I find it very rewarding to show the young ones how to help themselves. I'm very proud that my work is being recognised." He has been helping out four times a week at the centre - more during the school holidays - getting involved in arts projects, helping backstage with shows and gigs. The centre runs arts awards projects that result in nationally-recognised qualifications, a youth theatre and a music studio, catering for up to 200 youngsters aged from 11 to 19. Dan has also created a website for young people in the area to showcase their work as well as providing information and advice and a what's on section. He has also been involved in the setting up of a health drop-in centre at the premises, which is due to open in the spring giving advice on drugs, alcohol, smoking, bullying, stress, sexual health problems, and family issues. INFORMATION: The SkillsTrain Yopey is open to young people who give to others and are positive role models. They should be aged 10 to 25 and live, work or study in Cambridgeshire.
