MAY I suggest that Andrew Bright (Letters, June 3) re-reads my original letter of May 13, and notes that it starts by expressing concern over a tragic and unnecessary death.
As a child, the folly and danger of playing in the road were part of my early education. That current law does not prohibit cyclists racing on the public highway, albeit against the clock in a time-trial, does not imply that it is either safe or desirable to do so, particularly on a major trunk road.
The A1 between Buckden and Tempsford, contrary to Mr Bright's assertion, is not "a straight piece of road where a motorist can see at least a mile in front of them," and I would suggest that he pay a little more attention to the road rather than the speed at which he rides.
Further, his claim that on a Bank Holiday Sunday morning there was "very little traffic on the road" runs contrary to the rate at which the traffic build-up presented management problems on both carriageways when the southbound carriageway was closed and traffic diverted westwards.

For the record, I was not held up, but am justifiably concerned by the lack of suitable diversion routes for the A1 and the potential of the loss of A14 Huntingdon-Alconbury spur.
The effects of closure of the A1 for over five hours and the resultant effect on surrounding roads and communities of the diversions put in place have repercussions beyond inconvenience, noise and pollution. The rural roads to the west of the A1 were never intended to take the volumes of traffic of a major trunk road, and the river crossing at Offord to the east renders diversion in that direction impossible.

Delays and diversions that affected hundreds of motorists are in human terms insignificant in the face of an unnecessary death. Perhaps Mr Bright might reconsider whether this is a justifiable cost for a "sport" that involves adults "playing in the road".
