I HAVE to agree with some of your recent correspondents and their views on the need to consider public expenditure more carefully.

In the current climate of stringency in the public sector, may I ask that our respective councils of all shapes and sizes resist the temptation to spend our money on projects we neither want nor need.

I am sure your readers could add to a list, but may I start with examples such as the contra-flow bus lane on Huntingdon ring road and the rarely used two-minute-saving bus route on the Old Houghton Road in Hartford? These alone have cost the taxpayer some 500,000, not to mention, of course, the great white guided elephant.
