WITH reference to the campaign to force the council to provide a safe foot crossing over the A141 at Sapley to access the Jubilee sports field, I sincerely hope the campaign has not foundered or run out of steam.
I wish the campaign organisers every success with their attempts to force the council to provide a safe and easy crossing of the A141. Of course, every rational person thinks that this is something that should have been considered when the Jubilee Fields project was first approved.
I do have one reservation about the council's reported proposed actions: the Hunts Post reports mention a ban on right-turning traffic at the Sapley junction. This is very worrying on two points - this move will do nothing to make crossing the A141 on foot safer in the slightest, and it will greatly inconvenience motorists when returning from the sports field itself and wishing to travel to homes in the north of Huntingdon.
Workers and shoppers living in the Raveleys, Wistow, Upwood, and Ramsey St Mary's will not be able to reach the leisure facilities and trading estates around Tesco without a two-and-a-half-mile detour, diverting very probably through the speed-humped Abbots Ripton.
While a case could possibly be made for a ban on westbound traffic (that already on the bypass) turning right towards Kings Ripton, it would be folly indeed to ban traffic from the north turning right onto the A141, thereby increasing vehicular traffic through a small village, while completely failing to improve pedestrian safety for sports field users.
