SOPHIE, The Countess of Wessex, was at Wood Green Animal Shelters on Thursday to open - among other things - a maternity unit for cats.

The Countess was at the animal rescue centre in Godmanchester to open phase two of the 'Cat Village', a facility costing £400,000. The new building includes 15 cat isolation units, nine kitten rehoming units, a maternity unit and a kitten playroom. Some £50,000 has been spent on new apparatus, including medical equipment.

The building has been funded by legacies and donations to the charity's Vanilla Appeal.

The shelter, one of the biggest in Europe, was officially opened in 1987 by Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne, the Princess Royal. Three years ago, The Duke of Gloucester officially opened the Coco Markus Kennels.
