HUNTINGDONSHIRE traffic management committee wants to spend £1.1 million to cut the traffic jams and reduce pollution in St Neots town centre (The Hunts Post, March 5).

If county councillors had heeded the views of local residents before introducing the last traffic management plan five years or so ago, further meddling and expense would not be required.

It seems the more "improvements" carried out to our town centre junctions the more the council has to spend on corrective measures to undo the last "good idea". In particular, it was extremely short-sighted of the council to close completely the left turn into Priory Lane from the town bridge, which residents of the Eatons will remember allowed them to drive to Waitrose, the town centre car parks and Little Paxton without being forced along an already congested High Street.

I wonder just how many members of the Huntingdonshire traffic management committee actually live and work in St Neots.
