A COUNCILLOR concerned about his grandchildren’s walk to school is calling for a reduced speed limit on a busy St Ives road.

Cllr John Davies regularly collects his four grandchildren, who go to Eastfield Infant and Westfield Junior schools, and has expressed his worries about traffic using the southern stretch of Ramsey Road.

He told The Hunts Post: “There’s a lot of traffic at rush-hour times that uses that stretch of road as a rat run. Instead of using the A1123, they cut through the town to reach Harrison Way.

“I have contacted the two county councillors for St Ives, Kevin Reynolds and Roy Pegrum, as well as the highways department. So far, I have had a response from Cllr Reynolds, who said he will be looking into the matter.”

A Cambridgeshire County Council spokesman said: “Our policy guidelines do enable us to introduce 20mph speed limits outside schools and if Mr Davies makes representations to us with regard to such a limit outside Westfield school, it will be considered. Those considerations would include the accident record at the site and financial resources available.”
