FOURTEEN small environmental improvement schemes, costing from £2,000 to £25,000, are set to get the go-ahead in Huntingdonshire.

The district council's cabinet will tomorrow (Thursday) be asked to contribute £73,000 towards the £96,000 total cost.

They range from the £2,000 refurbishment of pedestrian crossing railings in Somersham to £25,000 improvements to the square in Montagu Street, St Neots. HDC contributes up to 75 per cent of the cost of the projects, which will be carried out from next April.

Five of the schemes involve repairs to church gates, walls and access - in Covington, Godmanchester, Holywell, Holme and Ellington - parish pump improvements in Waresley and Alconbury, and an obelisk in Brampton.

Other projects are in Alwalton, Kimbolton, Great Staughton and Warboys.

They were chosen from a total of 38 schemes submitted by parish councils across the district. If any of the 14 is abandoned or deferred, other schemes can be brought forward.

Schemes in the current year's programme, which is largely complete, include church wall repairs in Catworth and Holme and refurbishment of the Jubilee Clock in Warboys, where further work may be needed.

Still outstanding for the year to April 2007, due to ongoing negotiations, is an approved scheme for improvements near Bridge Street, St Ives.
