GODMANCHESTER is to get new flood defences worth up to 11million, it was revealed today (Monday).

The scheme, which was first proposed in 2005, will offer protection to more than 500 homes and businesses, reducing the risk of annual flooding.

Geoff Brighty, Environment Agency Area Manager said: "We are delighted to have received funding for the flood alleviation scheme. By investing up to 11million pounds in the scheme we hope that people can see the level of commitment we are making towards reducing flood risk in the area.

"While Godmanchester has not flooded in recent years the effects of climate change mean that the risk of it happening in future would be more likely, and we are keen to act now to protect people and properties for the long term."
