NO new cases of swine flu have been identified in Cambridgeshire since a woman from Huntingdonshire was found to have contracted the disease.

The first case of swine flu in the county was confirmed by health chiefs at the start of the week.

The affected person is a woman living in Huntingdonshire, although health officials have not revealed her exact location, age or name.

The woman was among four new cases confirmed in the East of England on Monday (May 11). The cases include a man from North Weald, who is a close contact of an already confirmed case, a child from Canvey Island who has returned from travel in Mexico, a man from Lowestoft who has returned from travel in Florida and the woman from Huntingdonshire.

The source of the woman's infection is still being investigated and she is being treated at home, where she is said to be responding well.

On Wednesday (May 13) a spokesman for Cambridgeshire PCT said apart from the Huntingdonshire woman, no other cases of swine flu had been identified in Cambridgeshire.

Dr Liz Robin, director of public health at NHS Cambridgeshire, said: "I can confirm that a woman from Cambridgeshire has tested positive for swine flu. She has mild symptoms and is doing well following treatment with anti-virals at home.

"The Health Protection Agency and NHS Cambridgeshire are working together to identify the source of her infection. In the meantime, people who have been in close contact with the woman have been offered antiviral drugs."

Dr Paul Cosford, Regional Director of Public Health said: "As a region the NHS in the east of England is well prepared for cases of swine influenza.

"If you are worried about swine flu, call the information line on 0800 1513513. If you have flu-like symptoms, stay at home and contact NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or phone your GP.

"There are simple steps that everyone can take to help prevent catching colds and flu based on good respiratory and hand hygiene.

"Always use a tissue to catch your sneezes, throw away used tissues where germs can linger and regularly wash your hands."

In total 65 cases of swine flu have been confirmed across the UK and more than 330 cases are under investigation.

Chris Banks, Chief Executive of NHS Cambridgeshire will be giving a talk about Swine Flu at the AGM of Cambridgeshire Local Involvement Network on Thursday (May 14) at Witchford Pavilion. The meeting starts at 6.30pm.
