A BIT of Cadfael will come to Huntingdonshire in the summer.

The Rev Dr Robin McKenzie, who is assistant curate and chaplain to pilgrims and tourists at Shrewsbury Abbey - the setting for Ellis Peters's mediaeval whodunnits - is to take over as priest in charge of Fenstanton and Hilton.

The part-time post will be the first incumbency for Dr McKenzie, 46, whose background is in engineering sales and marketing, and who was ordained five years ago after training in Durham.

He expects to move into Fenstanton Vicarage some time in June before licensing in July to take charge of the village's St Peter and St Paul's Church and St Mary Magdalene, Hilton.

The previous incumbent, the Rev Canon Dr Maggie Guite, who was also rural dean of Huntingdonshire, moved to Newnham, Cambridge, last September.

Dr McKenzie, who has experience in the automotive and aerospace industries, as well as cement and paint, graduated from Sheffield University in electronic engineering. His engineering doctorate was taken at Warwick, and he is studying for a further MSc Engineering degree in industrial management.

The part-time nature of the post - he will work Sundays and two other days in the twin parishes - will enable him to continue working with an educational consultancy in the Shropshire county town. He may also develop his own consultancy in Huntingdonshire.

He is due to deliver a talk on manufacturing ethics at the Royal Academy of Engineering in June.

"This is a bit of a step of faith for me," he told The Hunts Post. "I'm interested in developing my parish ministry, so to have the opportunity is very exciting.

"It will be good to be near Cambridge, and the fact that my parents still live in Sheffield was a consideration when I was offered the post. It's a nice part of the world and near to family and friends."

Dr McKenzie is married to Amanda, and they have two daughters, Annabel, 10, and eight-year-old Caroline.
