A GAY couple from Brampton have been left angry and humiliated after being refused a bed at a guest house because the owner said it was "against her convictions".

Michael Black, 62, and John Morgan, 56, of Huntingdon Road, have reported the owner of the Swiss B&B in Cookham, Berkshire to police for discriminating against them.

The couple arrived at the guest house near Maidenhead on Friday afternoon and were met outside by the owner Susanne Wilkinson.

"As soon as she saw we were two men together her whole body language changed," said Mr Morgan. "When we got out of the car she was immediately unfriendly. It was not a warm reception. She said, 'it's a double room', and we said 'yes'. She said, 'it's a double bed in a double room' and we said, 'yes', and then she said it was against her convictions to allow men to share a bed.

"She was polite but firm, so we asked for our deposit back and we left.

"As far as we are concerned she broke the law by discriminating against us. I can't believe something like this could happen in 2010."

Mr Black who is an exams consultant and author of education books, said: "We felt humiliated. We were treated like lepers - as if we were too unclean to be under her roof.

"I've been out for 35 years and I have never experienced homophobia. We have received some cold receptions but we have never been discriminated against."

Determined not to let the experience ruin their weekend, the couple went to the theatre with friends and then drove the 80 mile journey home.

The couple have been together six years after meeting through Huntingdon Drama Club, which they are both still involved with.

Mr Morgan who works as a computer consultant and is town councillor for Huntingdon North said the incident had left him feeling "very angry".

A spokesman for Thames Valley Police said it was not a criminal matter and it had been noted as a "homophobic incident". She said it was a civil matter and the couple could take Mrs Wilkinson to county court.

Mrs Wilkinson did not respond to phone messages and emails sent by The Hunts Post.
