A FATHER has told how he attempted to resuscitate his teenage son after he suddenly collapsed and died on his way to a party.

David Follon, 14, was taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon at 6pm on Saturday after collapsing in the driveway of a friend's farm in Hail Weston.

He was pronounced dead at 7.20pm, just a few days before his birthday on March 24.

The teenager, who lived in Ermine Street South, Papworth Everard, had got out of his father's car to unlock the farm gate when he stepped backwards and collapsed.

His father Robert Follon told The Hunts Post: "As David pulled the gate back he just collapsed backwards. I gave him CPR but nothing happened."

A post mortem examination carried out yesterday was unable to ascertain how David, a Swavesey Village College pupil, died. An inquest will be carried out at a later date.

Mr Follon added: "It was just totally out of the blue and I need to know why it happened. As far as we were concerned David was a perfectly healthy boy."

David, who attended the Alconbury Independent Baptist Church with his family, had been due at a farewell party for some American girls who had also been attending the church.

Morris Hull, from Pastures Farm Cottage, Kimbolton Road, Hail Weston, where the party was due to take place, added: "When we discovered what happened, the party was cancelled. It was a shock to us all."

David, who was born at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, attended church every Sunday and helped out at the children's bible club, and had recently been helping to paint the church hallway.

Mr Follon said: "He liked everything to do with the church. He took to the church straightaway and committed his life to Christ.

"He was baptised in the church and largely grew up within the church."

He had just been expected to start work experience at The Cook Inn in Hemingford Grey in June, and had just become a full member of the Cromwell District Explorer Scouts.

He also had an interest in gardening.

His father added: "He liked doing things with his hands. He loved gardening and would help our next door neighbour, who is a landscape gardener, look after his garden. He had big plans for our garden but hadn't started yet as it is such a mess."

He also had an interest in construction and for his birthday his parents father and mother, Judith, had brought him a toolbag.

Headteacher at Swavesey Village College, Martin Bacon said the whole school community had been shocked by the tragic news of David's death.

He said: "Students of all ages have come forward with their own personal tributes to him. In these tributes he has been repeatedly described as caring, joyful and friendly."

Fellow construction students at the school are considering celebrating David's life through a lasting memorial by making a cross.

A police spokesman said David's death had been investigated and was not treated as suspicious.

INFORMATION: David's funeral is being arranged through Dennis Easton, St Ives, and a David Matthew Follon memorial fund is being sent up to raise funds for missionary work with children.
