KEEN gardeners were blooming at the annual Huntingdon Allotment Holders competition. Judges visited the town's allotment sites at Sallowbush Road, Hartford Road, North Street and Primrose Lane to look for the best gardeners and growers. Despite the dry summer so far this year, they found an impressive display of seasonal produce. The best kept allotment award was won by Terry Bruce for his plot is on Hartford Road, while best newcomer - for plot holders who have taken allotment tenancy since September 2005 - was won by Chris Harman, who has a plot on the North Street site. Colin Nickerson, the eastern region representative of the National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners, said: "There were 19 newcomers at the Sallowbush road site this year, this is a promising development on what two years ago was a deserted site." Paul Smith, of Huntingdonshire District Council, and Jack Waterfall of Food Skills, Ely, made up the judging panel along with Mr Nickerson.
