Huntingdonshire District Council planning officer Bill Tilley snapped the blaze at 11.45am on Monday after the Toyota he was following on the southbound carriageway burst into flames.
Mr Tilley, 47, said: "I've never seen anything like it in 35 years of driving. The car just engulfed in flames.
"There was no warning, the fire brigade were on the scene within five minutes to get the fire under control but it was all very dramatic."
No one was injured in the incident, which took place near Alconbury at junction 14 of the A1(M).
* A FEMALE motorist was alleged to have caused havoc by driving the wrong way down the A14 in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Police said an Estonian driver was forced to swerve his Mercedes articulated lorry to try to avoid an oncoming silver Vauxhall Astra close to Brington.
The lorry hit the central reservation, blocking the road in both directions for hours.
The Astra driver, a 28-year-old from Northampton, was taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital with minor injuries and the lorry driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
Police closed the A14 in both directions west of the Brampton Hut junction after the accident which took place at 1am. The closure remained in place into the morning rush hour.
Diesel from the lorry, which was carrying 21 tonnes of pork, was spilt on the carriageway.
Police and fire crews from Huntingdon and Kimbolton attended the scene.
A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said the crash investigation was still going on.
