COMMUNITY groups are being encouraged to bid for up to 10,000 for improvements to roads in their neighbourhoods.

Town and parish councils are also being invited to bid for the cash which could be put towards speed bumps, pedestrian crossings, road markings and parking controls, as well as other schemes.

“Projects could involve any highway measure or improvement that is considered to offer benefit to the community,” Emma Murden, area manager for Cambridgeshire County Council said.

Those that bid can are asked to make a statement supporting their application to highlight the benefits it might make but are expected to make a contribution towards the projects of a least 10 per cent of the total cost.

Communities would also need to meet any ongoing costs of their scheme.

Applications submitted by the December 21 deadline are then assessed by between four and six county councillors, with council officers on hand to advise on safety implications and deliverability.

“This approach gives local people a real influence over highway improvements in their community,” Ms Murden added.

“Applicants should demonstrate that there is support for the scheme from local people. The panels will take into account the views of parish councils and district councillors as appropriate, before making recommendations on allocating funding.”
