I HAVE been following the recent Hunts Post articles in relation to the residents' parking scheme around the Priory Road area of Huntingdon.

I live just around the corner from Priory Road, in Avenue Road. I purchased my property just over a year ago and, although I have my own driveway, I was soon experiencing problems of anti-social parking by town workers and visitors to the town. Vehicles were being abadoned over-hanging my driveway or parked across it, so I could not maneouvre on or off without having major problems. The road starts filling up from 7.30am right though until 6pm.

I contacted the highway authority to explain my difficulties and requested a white line over my drive, to which they responded that, if I had an obvious drive, they would not do it and suggested I widen my driveway or contact the police. I have contacted them several times by phone since but they are unhelpful and uninterested and advised me that a residents' parking/double yellow line proposal was being discussed for the area in 2006.

I was then sent proposals of the new scheme at the end of 2005 and, although I was invited to comment, it was not clear until I contacted them again that they were relying on residents' comments in order to implement the scheme.

I then wrote in favour of the proposals I had been sent, reiterating my problems and that I did not consider it a solution to keep contacting the police when appropriate road markings would resolve the problem.

The first I had heard that the residents' parking had not been approved was in your paper.

I think the whole project has been mis-managed by the highway authority and I feel they never did want to introduce a scheme at all and their methods have been a bit underhand.

I have today received the final proposals, following their meeting, and have discovered that not only are there not going to be residents' spaces but they have thrown out the double yellow lines, except on some corners.

In order to try to resolve my own problems I have removed my front gates and gatepost to widen my driveway to give me extra space to maneouvre, but this did not help. I have since also removed part of my front fence and, although I now have a very wide driveway, it has not made the slightest difference.

I feel the highway authority has a duty to act so residents can access and park in their own street.
