I take the same view on recent events at a Fenland household waste recycling centre. You don't get to be the highest performing county in the nation for recycling without having dedicated and hard-working staff. At the March recycling centre, the staff work for a contractor, but they are equally highly regarded.

A customer who was asked to put his rubbish in the correct skip reacted by thumping one of the staff and chasing another all round the site. The matter was reported to the police and he was promptly arrested and cautioned.

I remain unconvinced that the caution will do much to encourage more civilised behaviour. It seems to be more and more common to find that the most minor disagreement can lead to violence.

Again, I believe that the general public would like to see a less tolerant reaction. I shall be asking a few questions with my police authority hat on - although such things are more in the chief constable's bailiwick than mine.
