I WOULD like to proclaim my total support for the councillors Doug Dew and John Davies in their fight against the proposal to have an amusement arcade in Bridge Street.

As a past user of amusement arcades, in the main on seaside holidays, I have nothing against them in principle.

Conservation area or not, to have one in Bridge Street, St Ives, would be a blot on the landscape. Giving the proposal the name "adult gaming centre" gives further grounds for concern and brings up all kinds of connotations which could be even more unsavoury.

Our attractive town is lucky to have a number of tourist visitors, and this proposal in the centre of the town would detract from the historic area. I cannot see how the occupation of a retail unit in Bridge Street by the proposed gaming centre will contribute to the commercial health of the town. It certainly would not enhance the café culture that is envisaged.

In summer particularly, who would welcome the clatter, bell noises and sirens emanating from the arcade with the flashing neon signs while enjoying a cup of coffee and a read on the street.

The proposal is misconceived and we have not yet addressed the anti-social possibilities that may develop from such an establishment.

Beside the fact that access to games machines can be gained in the pubs and clubs of the town if this type of outlet is felt necessary, there must be more suitable sites to the east side of the town.

I hope the voices that fought for the preservation of the Corn Exchange as a civic amenity will be loud against the proposal. This, I hope, will include the learned civic society and the association of central town dwellers concerned over future town centre development.

Could the council now take the opportunity to give the black cross on the Woolworth building a decent coat of paint now the business is no longer.
