PLEASE do not allow Carey Leisure to open an amusement arcade in Market Hill.

My daughter moved to Huntingdon two years ago because she could not afford a house in Cambridge, where I lived, intending to move back to Cambridge when she could afford to. She absolutely loves Huntingdon and the surrounding areas and will not be moving back to Cambridge. The people are so friendly and kind here.

As a result of my regularly visiting her and realising how nice Huntingdon and the people are, I have now moved to Huntingdon and have three friends who are also moving here from Cambridge.

Huntingdon is a super little market town with so much potential for all the people living here. We have a wonderful river running through the town which, if a walk was made along the length of it from the boatyard to Hartford, could open up the river even more and be wonderful for all residents. We would actually have a better river frontage than St Ives or Cambridge.

We have Grafham Water, beautiful countryside, Hinchingbrooke Park, Hinchingbrooke Hospital, a train station to London, great garden centres, fantastic supermarkets, new law courts and more new buildings going up - Huntingdon is looking great and the only thing we need desperately now is a vibrant town centre.

Over the past 10 years I have watched Stamford, Oakham and Saffron Walden take advantage of being little market towns not by competing with Cambridge or Peterborough, where all the large stores are, but by opening independent tea shops, gift shops, boutiques and interior shops. Now they are all buzzing at weekends with residents and visitors, and youngsters have jobs they are enjoying and money is pouring into these towns.

Perhaps we need to give incentives to people to open these sorts of businesses in the town centre.

The youngsters of this town need a nice place to live and also a place to be able to dress up and go to in the evenings and, if possible, work.

What they do not need is a place to go and lose their money mindlessly during the day.

As a person who is seeing Huntingdon with new eyes, I can see it has so much potential for its residents as long as it is channelled in the right direction - and Carey Leisure is not the right one.

WE do not need an amusement arcade in the Market Square any more than we needed a new shopping precinct to house Clinton Cards. Why is it that St Ives attracts quality shops that always evade Huntingdon?
