THE A428 between Caxton Gibbet and the A1 should be upgraded to a dual carriageway, according to long-term transport proposals published this week.
The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Long Term Transport Strategy covers transport growth across the region’s seven local authorities up to 2050.
The document suggests a host of measures aimed at supporting the economic prosperity of the region and recommends drawing up an investment plan to pay for the infrastructure work.
Among the longer-term recommendations up to 2050 is the building of a dual carriageway between the A1198 and the Black Cat roundabout. Due to the future development of St Neots, the new route would be on a different alignment to the current A428.
Another 2050 objective is the construction of a northern link road at St Neots to deal with northbound A1 traffic.
Other proposed projects include:

Widening of the A14 between Ellington and Milton (already planned)
St Neots park and ride site
Improvements to increase capacity at the A428/A1198 Caxton Gibbet junction
Completion of the Cambridge to Huntingdon cycle route
Improved rolling stock and longer trains between London and Peterborough
Long-term projects (to 2050)
The building of a new rail link between Cambridge and Bedford linking to Milton Keynes and Oxford
Huntingdon to Peterborough cycle route via Alconbury
St Neots to Cambridge cycle route via Cambourne
Consider a new park and ride site on the A428 between Cambourne and the A1303 junction
High quality passenger transport corridor between Cambridge and St Neots
The report admits that funding for the strategy would be a “considerable challenge”, but the Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Rutland Local Transport Body (LTB) has been established to allocate money for the major schemes.
It is hoped the LTB will improve work between the local authorities to help deliver as many projects as possible.
