TWO supporters of the campaign to see safety improvements introduced on the A141 that claimed the life of teenager Warren Hay have themselves been involved in an accident on the same road.

Police were called at 2.15pm on Friday to reports of a collision at the Kings Ripton Road junction on the A141 in Huntingdon.

Nina and Adam Barber, of Kent Road, Huntingdon, who were married on May 12 at Hartford Church, were on their way to pick up their two children from nursery when the accident happened.

Twenty-nine-year-old Mrs Barber was airlifted to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge with head injuries. At the time of going to press Mrs Baber was said by the hospital to be in a "stable and improving condition." Mr Barber was treated for minor injuries at the scene by paramedics. The couple had to have their car dragged from a ditch.

It is believed that their green Land-Rover Freelander was in collision with a black Ford Escort turning out of the King's Ripton Road junction. The driver of the Escort was reported to have escaped uninjured.

Mrs Barber's cousin, Shaun Collins, told The Hunts Post that the couple had been supporting the campaign for safety measures on the A141.

John Dunleavy, a member of the Warren Hay Road Safety Action Group, which is campaigning for safety improvements on the road, said the accident had been a terrible shock to all who supported the campaign. He said: "It was a hard thing to take and our thoughts are with the woman and her family."

Warren Hay, 16, from Alconbury, died on May 13 trying to cross the A141 near the Kings Ripton Road junction to get to Jubilee Park. His parents, Maxine and John, are fighting for a safe crossing on the road.

So far more than 7,600 signatures have been collected for the campaign but a decision is unlikely to be made until after an inquest and police investigation into Warren's death.

Cambridgeshire County Council has asked its officers to work with representatives from the action group to investigate options so that a report can be presented in September to fast-track the process.

On hearing about the most recent accident on the road, a county council spokesman said: "We are concerned to hear that there has been an accident at this junction. The details of this will also form part of ongoing investigations into the junction following the fatal accident there. Officers are currently investigating the problem and talking to local campaigners."

MP for Huntingdon Jonathan Djanogly, who is supporting the campaign, said he was amazed more serious accidents had not occurred at the site and improvements to the road "had to be a priority for the county council".
