A HAIRDRESSER could lose thousands of pounds in business after gallons of water cascaded through the ceiling.
Staff at Tangles hair salon, in Buckden High Street, arrived at work last Thursday to find themselves ankle-deep in water, and more water gushing through a hole in the ceiling.
The fire brigade was called and following an investigation it was alleged that water pipes in the flat above the salon had not been properly connected following recent work.
The owners of the shop believe they will be closed for at least another week while insurance companies wrangle over who pays the bill.
Salon partner Andrea Taylor said: "It was a big shock for our staff to see the mess caused by the flooding.
"In nearly three years here we have never had to shut the salon unexpectedly before."
The water made three large holes in the salon ceiling and caused extensive damage to the reception desk.
Staff then had to dry out soaked appointment books and contact customers who had made bookings.
Ms Taylor said: "We have already had to cancel 80 bookings for this week and that doesn't take account for walk-in customers. It seems we are looking at losing a lot of money but we are working hard to make sure we can continue to pay our staff."
The leak has also delayed the flat's new resident from moving in.
Ms Taylor said: "We would like to offer our sincere apologies to our clients for the inconvenience and hope that they will understand our predicament and remain loyal during this period.
"One lady asked if we could visit her at home but, unfortunately, we are not insured to do that. It is all very upsetting and frustrating."
The salon will remain closed for at least another seven days from today (Wednesday).
