A WEEK long speed enforcement campaign in Huntingdonshire resulted in more than 700 people being caught speeding.

The initiative was part of a European-wide campaign organised by TISPOL (Traffic Information System Police) that ran the week commencing Monday, April 20.

During the campaign, officers conducted a number of speed checks across the county and handed FPN (Fixed Penalty Notices) to 62 drivers.

Some 694 people were caught speeding by mobile and fixed cameras, resulting in a 60 fine and three points on their licence. More serious offences were dealt with by summons to magistrates court and those caught over the limit at lesser speeds may be invited to attend a speed awareness course.

PC Tony Barrios, casualty reduction officer for Cambridgeshire Police, said: "These results show that there are still a number of drivers who think it is acceptable to speed on the county's roads.

"Excessive and inappropriate speeding is one of the main contributions to avoidable collisions that result in death or serious injury.

"Those who break the speed limit or speed inappropriately when driving are not only risking their own lives but also the lives of others.

"Speeding is an issue that concerns many residents in the county and one that we take extremely seriously.

"We will continue to work to make the roads of Cambridgeshire a safer place for everyone who uses them."

INFORMATION: Anyone caught speeding will be issued a FPN, resulting in a 60 fine and three points on their licence or a court summons for more serious offences.
