I HAVE seen a great deal written over the proposed changes to the A14. May I suggest a simpler, cheaper solution, guaranteed to keep traffic moving during the morning and evening busy periods, and involving no disruption to normal traffic - the construction of three lorry parks, situated at Quy, Girton and Brampton; ban all lorry movements on the A14 between those points from 6.30am to 9.30am and then 3.30pm till 6.30pm: release the lorries onto the road at the rate of one every 30 seconds from the parks between those hours.
Of course it would have to be enforced with substantial fines for transgressors, including the impounding of foreign-registered lorries.
Drivers would soon learn to pass through this area at times that do not inconvenience the rest of the travelling public.
When, may I ask, is the Government going to bring us into line with the rest of Europe and ban overtaking by heavy goods vehicles during daytime and ban them from the roads altogether on Sundays.
They have, of course, instituted a trial section on the A14, which is a complete nonsense as it is not policed and is therefore ignored by lorries with foreign registrations, as are the 7.5-tonne signs in our villages.
