Around 300 construction jobs will be created by the building of a new 150m intelligence hub at RAF Wyton, with contractors Skanska looking to recruit from the surrounding area.

Skanska director Matt Collins said that the proportion of the jobs going to local workers would depend upon the skills available. "It makes sense for us to recruit people locally - that is the best situation for everyone. It's win-win," he said.

The development, which is already underway, will see the 1930s barracks on the base replaced with a state-of-the-art intelligence centre over the next four years. RAF Wyton will then become the national centre for the collection of intelligence, collating information for front-line operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as co-ordinating routine geographical surveying and mapping.

The new buildings will house the Headquarters Intelligence Collection Group, currently based at Feltham, the National Imagery Exploitation Centre (also known as JARIC), currently at Brampton, and 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic), currently based at Hermitage near Newbury and in Germany. It is expected that the 1100 personnel will have moved to Wyton by 2013.
