THE Little Paxton woman who killed an army major during a cycling time trial has been jailed for 21 months.
Nineteen-year-old Katie Hart collided with Major Gareth Rhys-Evans at 70mph as he competed in the race on the morning of May 3 last year, throwing him over the roof of her car and into the fast lane of the A1 near Eaton Ford. The father-of-two was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hart, of Lakefield Avenue, pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving, but was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving - a more serious charge - at Peterborough Crown Court last month.
Pre-sentence reports said Hart was a "kind, responsible and sensitive young lady" who had shown guilt and empathy in the wake of the accident.
Judge Nicholas Coleman said a term of custody was appropriate, but that Hart would serve half the sentence handed down. She has also been disqualified from driving for 24 months.
