A MAN was punched to the ground and cut with a knife after confronting a burglar who had broken into his home.

The assault took place in Shakespeare Road, St Ives at 8.40pm on Monday (February 1). The 25-year-old victim walked into his kitchen and was punched by someone who had entered the property through the back door. A scuffle took place and the victim was cut to the chest and arm by what was thought to be a Stanley knife.

The victim managed to push the offender off him and the burglar escaped through the back garden and into the alleyway that runs between Chaucer Way and Dryden Close.

The victim was taken to Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon to receive treatment and was later discharged.

DC Anthony Grief said: "We believe the victim had disturbed a burglar and the resident was assaulted several times. Nothing was stolen from the house.

"I would like to speak to anyone who was in this area of St Ives, who saw someone running from the Shakespeare Road or has any information about this offence."
