YOUR correspondent, Mr Jackson (Letters, June 21) is wrong in his assertion that the trustees of the playing field in Hemingford Grey "have decided our village children do not deserve anything in the way of playing areas". He is also wrong to say that the project to provide new play equipment has run out of money.

As part of the project to provide a new squash court, gym and car park, grants for play equipment have been made by the Hunts County Squash Club, Hemingford Grey Parish Council, and the playing field trustees.

An application for further funds was also made to an environmental trust, but it has recently been learned that this was unfortunately unsuccessful. Because of this it has been necessary to renovate some of the play equipment from the old play area and then to request a play equipment supplier to draw up and cost plans incorporating the existing equipment. Regrettably this has taken longer than anticipated, but the trustees will go ahead with installing new play equipment as soon as possible.

Finally, many of the trustees would be very happy "to make way for some younger blood" and we would welcome more volunteers from this age group.

* THERE is a recently-established committee looking into the renewal of the play equipment in Daintree Green, and if Mr Jackson had actually taken any time to get his facts right he would know that this committee of "talkers and no action" is made up, in fact, of several mothers and fathers, like myself, of pre- and primary school age children, who were sick and tired of having no real safe or interesting areas for our children to play.

Rome was not built in a day, and play parks certainly are not either. They take planning, consultation and a lot of money. Yes, we are working with the parish council, and yes there are members of this council helping us with funding issues, but without their help it would be very unlikely that such an idea would ever have got off the ground.

By the time this letter is printed we will have run a local competition to get ideas as to what village children would like to see in the park, and these ideas and suggestions will be taken on board. The entries from this were displayed at the village sports day on Sunday, along with proposals from play equipment manufacturers for Daintree Green.

If B Jackson was so concerned about our village children having no where to play, why didn't he join the committee like the rest of us concerned parents - it was well enough documented in parish magazines late 2005 - instead, in my opinion, of being someone who could so easily fit into the category of "all talk and no action".
